Many start-up customers select beverage categories purely based on current market trends. After selecting the product, they find that the line transformation cost is extremely high or even impossible to produce, leading to losses right after launch. In fact, product selection and production line are closely bound. Choosing the right product cluster allows one line to cover multiple SKUs and double the return on investment.
🏪 Step 1: Define channels first, then select products — packaging determines basic line configuration
The compatibility of beverage products depends on packaging forms, which are determined by sales channels:
- Supermarket & distribution channels: Prioritize PET bottles and tetra pak bricks. These two packaging formats have mature lines, high automation and low unit cost, suitable for mass production. The same PET bottle line can cover all specifications from 330ml to 1.5L only by replacing bottle molds, with very low trial and error cost.
- Catering & high-end retail channels: Prioritize glass bottles and aluminum cans, with higher premium space. However, glass bottle lines require matching bottle washers and corking machines, and can lines require dedicated seaming machines, with higher initial investment, suitable for customers with stable orders.
- Emerging channels (live streaming, convenience stores): You can try stand-up pouches and mini cans first, with low line investment and low minimum order quantity. But they are not recommended as main lines, and are suitable for adding single machines on the basis of the main line.
🧪 Step 2: Prioritize “same process, multiple categories” — one line covers multiple SKUs
For the first production line, it is not recommended to choose niche categories with great process differences. Prioritize product clusters with shared pre-treatment and sterilization processes, only different blending formulas. One line can produce multiple products:
- Juice, fruit tea, fruit vinegar: All adopt juicing/clarification pre-treatment, UHT sterilization and hot filling process, only different in blending formulas. The same line can switch seamlessly. Product change only requires CIP cleaning + formula replacement, and production switch can be completed within half a day.
- Plant protein drinks, grain drinks: All adopt pulping, homogenization and deaeration pre-treatment with the same sterilization process, only different in raw materials, suitable for paired production to complement off-peak and peak seasons.
- Carbonated drinks, sparkling water: The core process is carbonation mixing + isobaric filling, only different in syrup formulas, with the lowest product change cost.
🔄 Step 3: For small-batch multi-category production, choose flexible lines instead of large lines
Many customers want to produce multiple niche categories with small batch volume, but blindly purchase high-speed large lines. As a result, frequent product changes and long commissioning time lead to extremely low actual capacity utilization.
Correct selection: For small-batch multi-category scenarios, choose a medium flexible production line. Core advantages include fast bottle change, one-click formula switching, and fully automatic CIP cleaning. It can produce batches of 1–2 tons, and product change time is controlled within 2 hours. Although the hourly speed is not as high as large lines, it has higher overall operating rate, suitable for multi-category trial and customized order production.
